Obsessed With Sweats

COVID-19 was the cherry on top of the worst year yet. All of a sudden, students started waking up at 2 p.m. instead of 6 a.m. The norm of going to school took place in students’ living rooms. Seeing friends and extended family became a point of contention, confusion, and anxiety. Students across the country were trapped in their homes. Life became utterly mundane, the most exciting part of my day was going on a walk in my neighborhood. My daily cycle of waking up, laying on the couch, eating, and going back to sleep needed to end.

At a convenient time, my close friend Sara decided to start tie-dying sweatshirts as a down-time activity. I bought a hoodie from her shortly after, and we had an idea to sell the sweatshirts together. Three days later, Sara and I created Obsessed With Sweats, which is a custom tie-dye business that raises money for different organizations and charities each month.

What started as selling to family members turned into selling hundreds of products in only three months. Before we knew it, our boring lives drastically altered into numerous busy workdays. Rather than make a profit from our sales, we instead donated a portion of our sales to the Coronavirus Relief Fund to support frontline workers and other people affected by the pandemic.

We understood that although the world was plagued by COVID-19, there are plenty of other organizations and problems worth supporting. This month, we are donating to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The ACLU helps bring awareness to the importance of the Black Lives Matter Movement and includes the issue of police brutality across America. The ACLU brings light to equality through women's rights, racial injustice, immigration laws, and more.

By learning the ins-and-outs of a small fashion business, Sara and I have grown so much. We have reached out to both influencers and boutiques to sell our products, add products to our store, and have participated in multiple interviews.

What started as two bored girls expecting to make three sweatshirts turned into something bigger than we ever imagined. An idea can become a reality through hard work and the drive to want to succeed. We cannot wait to see what the future has in-store!
